It is a really good mix between academia and industry, and it shows us where the actual problems are in the industry, but it also shows industry what academia can provide in terms of solutions and services. I’ve been at these conferences for a long time, starting probably in the last century, and pretty much enjoyed that throughout the time.

Grid-forming converters represent a unique opportunity in contributing to power system operation and control. A relevant area which recently started to receive attention is the application of grid-forming converters within the wide-area damping control of power systems. Thanks to the flexibility in the formulation of the power-angle control law, grid-forming technology can play a fundamental role in the actuation of wide-area damping control schemes.
The tutorial will first recall the main concepts and characteristics of wide-area damping control. Then, the tutorial will delve into the integration of grid-forming converters within specific architectures for the wide-area damping control of power systems. It will be shown the potential benefit in terms of damping of inter-area oscillations and improvement of power system dynamics, highlighting the theoretical aspects and referring to the interconnected power system of Continental Europe as demonstrative example.

Rossano Musca is Assistant Professor at the University of Palermo (Italy), where is lecturer of the course “Dynamics and Control of Power Systems”. He received the MSc and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Palermo in 2007 and 2010, respectively. Prior to pursuing the academic career, he worked for several years for NEPLAN AG in Zurich (Switzerland), where he was responsible and lead software developer of the “Dynamic Analysis RMS and EMT” and “Small-Signal Stability” simulation modules. His main research interests are in power system dynamics and stability, control of power converters, grid-forming technology, wide-area monitoring and control, power system oscillations, and real-time simulations.
